Full pebbled brown morocco, with name "Maggie Stilz" on upper cover, spine missing 2' of top upper cover detached. ¶ Sarah Josepha Hale was the editor of the "Godey's Lady's Book" for 40 years until she retired in 1878. Her life and beliefs were radical for the Nineteenth Century. She believed in equal elementary education for girls and boys, higher education for women and women as public school teachers. She helped organize one of the first women's colleges. She believed in day nurseries, property rights for married women, better wages for women and physical education for them as well. Hale was also responsible for Thanksgiving as a National Holiday, and she suggested the first public playground, but she is best known as the author of 'Mary had a Little Lamb." She started her own magazine in 1828. Louis Godey started "Godey's Lafy's Book" in 1830. All of the articles were reprints from English publications.Godey hired Hale as editor in 1837 and she brought in American writers who were paid
