P. F. DeGrand's address "To the People of the United States. Rail Road from St. Louis to San Francisco." The appendix contains his "Remarks" from the opening of the South Shore Railroad, January 1, 1849, the text of a letter written to the Rev. Thomas F. Norris, Editor of the "Olive Branch" in Boston on Colonel Thomas H. Benton's speech and on the Rail Road to San Francisco. DeGrand's report and plan was approved by the "Friends" and its presentation to the President and Congress as well as the Governors of the states and territories. In the minutes it is noted that a letter was read from William Hooper in California "confirming the previous accounts of the abundance of Gold."
