Some fading and light rubbing of cloth, upper inner hinge starting, light browning else a very good copy in a brown morocco-backed slipcase and chemise. ¶ Tourgeé's semi-autobiographical novel of a Union colonel who following the Civil War purchases a plantation in Greensboro, N. C. The novel describes the troubles facing him, from carpetbaggers and the Ku Klux Klan for his having befriended freed slaves, to the Southerners who objected to his plans for abolishing state boundaries so that it could be readmitted to the Union as a territory
