Jeremy Bentham and the Usury Law.
N. P [New York?, 1836]. (BENTHAM, JEREMY) First edition. 8vo. 20 pages. Disbound, stitched, some soiling and marginal wear, "duplicate" stamps on first leaf and small library stamp on the third, else a very good copy. American Imprints 38292. ¶ Commenting somewhat astringently on Bentham's various arguments on usury law in his 1787 work "A Defence of Usury." The author criticizes Bentham and American bankers and stated that his/her intention was "to remove the prejudices which prevail (to a limited extent) among some men in trade, on account of the gross misrepresentaitons which have been made by Mr. Bentham, and others of his school. I am satisfied that most men have not given themselves the trouble of investigating the true policy and design of those laws, nor the principles upon which they are founded"
