"Despite his lack of spoken fluency in the Welsh language Hughes became a prolific writer of pamphlets, sermons, commentaries, and works in Welsh. His Horae Britannicae, or, Studies in Ancient British History ... and the Essay on the Ancient and Present State of the Welsh Language (1822) were important contributions to Welsh antiquarianism
