Engraved additional title page by Van der Gouwen after Romeyn de Hooghe, 100 half-page engravings, one vignette and one tailpiece de Hooghe. [15], 397; 12, 325 pp. Bound in full gilt blue morocco, a.e.g., by Zaehnsdorf in the manner of Derome. About fine. Bookplate of Helen Hay Whitney and Joan Whitney Payson. Ray. The Art of the French Illustrated Book, pp. 4-5; Brunet II/1735-36; Graesse Vol. II/102; Cohen-de Ricci 658- 659; Gay, Bibliographie de l'Amour Vol. II/166-168; Weller II/65 ("par Mad. Gomez" but according to Gay the Gomez version appeared in 1733). ¶ Wonderful edition of this famous collection of ribald tales modelled on the Decameron. The engravings are by the llustrator Romeyn de Hooghe, who "here displays his accustomed talent for devising a striking composition through which to interpret each story, and his actors perform their usual force and decisiveness. Over the last two decades de Hooghe has achieved a place in the pantheon of outstanding illustrators..and Les cent nouvelles nouvelles are eagerly sought by collectors." - Ray Two editions with the same imprint from the same year have been noted: one with the illustrations printed separately from the text; the other with the engravings set within the text. Although the priority is unknown, according to Cohen-de-Ricci "in all copies where the illustrations were separately printed , the quality is inferior to those with the engravings printed within the text."
