Japanese folding album of sixteen hinged leaves, containing 30 original watercolors, 16 of human figures in scenes from Japanese legends and literature, and 14 of scenes from nature, featuring birds in landscapes, flowers, the moon, trees, autumn grasses
Japan, mid-19th century. (JAPANESE ART) The watercolors, mostly in ink and gray wash, with much sprinkled gold, and some bodycolor on the human figures, measures 11 x 13- 1/2 inches; they are mounted on glazed board measuring 12 x 14-1/2 inches. . Brocade covers with decorated metal clasps (one missing), one cover detached; internally fine. In custom morocco backed folding box. ΒΆ A collection of finely rendered, unsigned watercolors, superbly composed, with elegant detailing in a fine professional hand. The two series are an interesting and effective juxtaposition between the world of legend and the beauties of nature, allowing the viewer to contemplate both the dramatic action of mythology and the serenity of idealized reality. Japanese (and Chinese) albums of the last century or so run the gamut from the garishly tawdry to the heights of sublimity; the level of this unique artwork is very high indeed
