Title: Jane Austen in Winchester.
Description: The Close, Winchester, Friends Winchester Cathedral, 1979. 3rd ed. VG PB. In this house Jane Austen lived her last days and died July 1817 reads the oval plaque in grey slate with white lettering. She stayed at Mrs. David's in College Street in the house now belonging to Winchester College. Here Mr. Lyford attended her and here she spent most of the time on a sofa. Sir Zachary Cope concluded her illness was Addison's disease. She seems not to have written any more fiction but shortly before she died she wrote a poem to mark St. Swithun's Day, July 15, a day still observed in Winchester.
