Title: Maine Gallery & Studio Guide.
Description: Portland, ME, PMA, (2012). VG PB. Front cover artist Winslow Homer lived in extraordinary times and enjoyed remarkable experiences. From 1836 in Boston and. dying in 1910 in Prouts Neck, Maine, Homer was of an age to converse with men who fired on British regulars as well as with those who commuted to Wall Street. Homer from a family of businessmen internalized the complexities and ambivalences of his age. He styled himself as a captain of industry and the 'hermit of Prouts Neck'. Well-traveled, well-read and well-dressed, Homer enjoyed the comforsts made available by industrial capitalism yet simultaneously eschewed the trappings of bourgeois life in search of authentic experience in a world increasingly un-tethered from the ties of traditional social economy. (Denenberg's Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Peace. In 2006 the PMA purchased Homer's studio at Prouts Neck and it is now open to the public. Front cover creased.
