Title: Raphael Soyer's New York People & Places.
Description: NY, Cooper Union, Boston Art, (1984). G PB. When Soyer was 14 years old and a recent immigrant from Russia, he and his brother Nises came down to town with their. portfolios. "We could draw as well as adults". The director of the Cooper Union took a look at the twins' work and immediately put them in the 3rd year. They attended free classes from 1914-1918. Soyers and his brother sold papers, ran errands and did other odd jobs during the day. But in the art school he found a haven. When he sat down with his charcoal and paper, all the insecurities of the day vanished and I felt and equal among my peers. When Raphael Soyer gave a talk to a Figurative Alliance meeting in New York he ended that talk by saying, "If art survives at all I am certain that realism will outlast all the other isms." Stain and scrapes to front cover where price labels removed.
