These young artists saw in paintings of the 15th century a religious fervor & simplicity of artistic aim which they longed to recall & they thought that Raphael's early work in Rome marked the change from that purer art to later & less single-minded designing. The society's avowed purpose was the encouragement of perfect sincerity & a lofty purpose in the practice of art. Rossetti burried all h is manuscripts in his wife's grave.
