Caroline Courtier: The Life of Lord Cottington Great Britain, Macmillan. 1973. 0333144058 Hard Cover with dust jacket. Ill.: Photo Illustrated. This hard cover book has a dust jacket with a picture of Lord Cottington against a green background with the title written in white and orange ink. The book is a biography od Lord Francis Cottington who raised himself from an obscure Somerset family of clothier landholders to a position of national promience and wealth through talent, hard work and long apprenticeship. He served the early Stuart monarchs in Spain and in Parliament, miraculously recovered from a confrontation with Buckingham, and became a privy counciller and Chancellor of the Exchequer during the so called "eleven years of tyranny" of Charles l from 1629 to 1640. He worked closely with Laud and Strafford in helping to shape royal policy, shared in the recrimination which the critics of the Crown heaped upon the royal counsellors and was driven from his offices by the Long Parliament on the eve of the Civil War. Thereafter, he helped mastermind the royalist war effort until 1646 when he fled to France to escape retribution at the hands of the Parliamentarians. There he followed Prince Charle's court in exile and forwarded the Royalist counter revolution, while the Parliamentarians took from him the considerable property and wealth he had to leave behind in England. The book is in very good condition and the dust jacke is in good condition. The book has 232 pages including an index and measures 5 by 8 inches. Very Good/Good.
