This book is the only accurately edited and translated work (there being in existence several corrupt versions), and it is a basic source history, it is also exciting, lusty and bloody. Diaz was with Cortes when he sank his ships, thus committing his party irrevocable to the conquest; he was close in the counsels of the leaders and was at hand when Montezuma was made a prisoner in his own palace. He fought in over 100 battles and skirmishes against an enemy who made living sacrifices of their prisoners; cutting out their hearts, butchering their bodies, skinning their bearded faces.
