DEBUYS, WILLIAM - River of Traps, A Village LifeDEBUYS, WILLIAM River of Traps, A Village Life
University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, NM, 1990, 1st Ed 2nd Pr. Hardbound. By William deBuys and Alex Harris. Like the Rio de las Trampas for which it is named, this book flows out of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico, where two cultures, Hispanic and Anglo, meet, where three men: Jacobo Romero, and old farmer; William deBuys, a young writer; and Alex Harris, a young photographer, lived and worked. When Harris and deBuys, fresh out of eastern colleges, moved to New Mexico in the 1970s, Jacobo Romero was the neighbor who befriended them and became their teacher. He used the tools of simple labor, shovel and axe, irony and humor, to show them how to survive and even flourish in their isolated mountain village. This book brings words and photographs seamlessly together in a portrait of all three men and of the place that shaped their lives. LCCN 89-25085. 238 Pgs.
