The first term is applied to all the new lands discovered at the opening of the sixteenth century; the second refers to the community of western Europe without regard to political divisions. The story is intended to outline some of the relationships between the Great Frontier and the Metropolis during modern times, and to show how the individual fared in the interaction between forces.
