MAILLOL, ARISTIDE AND MARC LAFARGUE (NELSON ROCKEFELLER ASSOCIATION COPY) Aristide Maillol, Sculpteur Et Lithographe. Maîtres Et Petits Maîtres D'Aujourd'Hui.
Paris: Galerie des Peintres-Graveurs, 1927. Text by Marc Lafargue in five languages, and FOUR ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED LITHOGRAPHS BY MAILLOL, HERE PRESENT IN TWO STATES EACH (8 signed lithographs in all), in black and in sanguine, printed on fine Montval paper. From a total edition of 125 copies, this is COPY "B", ONE OF ONLY 25 LETTERED COPIES WITH THE LITHOGRAPHS IN BOTH STATES. Guérin 267, 271, 272, and 274. From the collection of Nelson Rockefeller, onetime U.S. vice-president and owner of a great collection of modern art (his book plate on inside front cover). Unlike the recent ultra-rich casino owners and investment bankers who consider themselves to be art collectors--but who rely on art consultants to advise them as they accumulate crap--Rockefeller actually had taste and knowledge. Rockefeller sold this suite to Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), dean of American print dealers. The lithographs, of female nudes, are among the artist's largest and most important. Dealers have broken up virtually all copies of this suite, and the present copy is doubtless one of very few deluxe copies surviving intact. Large folio. Loose as issued in printed card portfolio. Portfolio cover in very good condition with some minor wear and creasing. Contents fine. The eight large folio lithographs are all in brilliant condition. An outstanding item. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. .
