(SCHWERDT Paris: Audot, 1822. Two volumes, complete. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this rare and important treatise on trapping birds and small mammals. COMPLETE WITH 60 FULL-PAGE PLATES: 58 etchings and two aquatints (Thiebaud erroneously calls them mezzotints). The etchings in the first volume show traps; the etchings in the second volume show birds; the two aquatints show hunting scenes. THIS COPY IS FROM THE SCHWERDT COLLECTION, THE GREATEST COLLECTION OF BOOKS ON HUNTING EVER ASSEMBLED. With the finely-engraved larger round Schwerdt bookplate (3 inches in diameter) in both volumes, featuring the Schwerdt arms and three miniature, marvelously detailed hunting scenes (Schwerdt used a smaller bookplate in his less important books, which is not an engraving but rather a photomechanical reproduction). Large 8vo. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND FOR SCHWERDT IN FULL POLISHED CALF, spines elegantly gilt in six compartments with Schwerdt's arms in the bottom compartment. Inner gilt dentelles, triple gilt filets on the covers. Top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Original illustrated wraps bound in. Joints superficially worn but still entirely solid. Some intermittent light foxing, but overall a clean and large-margined copy. Thiebaud 533-534; Schwerdt I, 287-288 (this copy), with a list of plates: "One of the best French books on traps, published during the last century.".
