Florence and Paris: Le Clerc and Le Boucher, 1776. First edition of the second published French translation of Dante's Inferno, the first to appear in almost two centuries (i.e. since 1597). With the original Italian text and extensive notes. Vital for the understanding of the reception of Dantein France during the Enlightenment. Moutonnet planned to translate the Purgatorio and the Paradiso as well, but those projects were never completed. A LARGE-PAPER COPY on thick Dutch laid paper. 4to. 19th century vellum-backed marbled boards. The slightest wisp of wear to the binding, and spine lettering somewhat eroded. Internally bright, clean, and entirely uncut, with wide margins. An excellent copy of a very rare book. Colomb de Batines 251, mentioning that there are a few large-paper copies on Dutch paper (like this one).
