KUBIN, ALFRED AND AUGUST STRINDBERG Nach Damaskus. Achtzehn Steinzeichnungen (18 lithographs by Alfred Kubin based on Strindberg's "To Damascus")
Muenchen (Munich): Georg Mueller, 1922. A portfolio of nineteen signed lithographs (including the title-frontispiece) by Alfred Kubin, based on Strindberg's "To Damascus", with an accompanying text booklet. From a total edition of 350 numbered copies, this is one of 50 deluxe copies, inwhich each lithograph is pencil-signed by the artist. Printed on fine watermarked wove paper. The accompanying text is an essay by Kubin explaining how he came to create these images: a full translation appears in Abraham Horodisch's "Alfred Kubin, Book Illustrator", pp. 33-34. Folio. Encased in the original hand-made parchment case. A few of the lithographs have professionally-restored minor marginal tears, well away from the images, and are otherwise bright and fine. The text bookletis lightly foxed. The portfolio is near fine. An excellent set of important Expressionist prints, and very rare. Bookplate of Luis de Caralt, a Barcelona publisher who was Spain's leading collector of modern illustrated books, on inside front cover of portfolio.
