Leipzig: Baumgaertner's Buchhandlung, 1870. Part one six-part work on monumental art in Italy from the 5th to the 16th century. With two enormous, stunning full-page mounted chromolithgraphs, one depicting Raphael's Stanza della Segnatura and one depicting St. Peter's Basilica from the inside. Each of these images is accompanied by a lengthy explanatory text in English, German, French, and Italian. Bound into this copy, exceptionally, is a third chromolithograph, published in 1875 by the Arundel Society, depicting the monument to the Doge Vendramin in the Church of Saints Giovanni and Paolo in Venice. Huge folio: 27 1/2 inches (70 cm) tall by 21 1/2 inches (55 cm) wide. Bound in contemporary half red morocco over cloth by Zaehnsdorf. Marbled endpapers. Original front wrapper bound in. Binding worn at extremities, piece of backstrip gone, but structurally sound and tight. Text pages foxed in margins, else clean. Chromolithographs bright and fine. Very rare.
