Title: The Labouring Life.
Description: Jonathan Cape, London, 1932. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 491pp. Green smooth-weave cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with the author's familiar owl logo gold-stamped to the upper board. With two-colour map-illustrated endpapers (drawn by the author) and a photographic portrait frontispiece. Spine ends lightly bruised and with a little spotting to the free endpapers and to two or three preliminary and concluding leaves. A small area of fading to the cloth at the head of the backstrip where the wrapper is defective. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, tanned a spine panel, and chipped at the spine ends with two small areas of loss, a little careful internal reinforcement, and just a hint of very minor soiling. A collection of thirty essays and sketches recounting village life in the decade following the Great War. Both this book and its companion piece, 'The Village Book' (1930), were subsequently rearranged and revised by Williamson in 1945 to form 'Tales of a Devon Village' and 'Life in a Devon Village'. Very Good/Very Good.
