Title: Deep Sea Chanties. Old Sea Songs. Edited by Frank Shay, and with an introduction by William McFee and decorations and woodcuts by Edward Arthur Wilson.
Description: William Heinemann, London, 1925. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition (first printing), printed in the US. 4to. 154pp. Paper-covered cloth with an orange paper spine label and a green title label. Pictorial endpapers, plus a colour title page decoration, sixteen tinted or full-colour plates, and over one hundred drawings, headers and vignettes. A light scattering of spotting to the edges, and backstrip discoloured in several places where the dust wrapper is defective. Endpapers lightly browned and spotted. A very crisp copy housed in a defective example of the uncommon dust wrapper, chipped with some areas of edge loss and creasing, and with a lengthy tear to the front panel-spine panel join. Former owner name neatly inked to the front endpaper. An eight page introduction by McFee precedes forty-seven shanties. Edward Arthur Wilson was born in Glasgow 1886, his early childhood was spent in Rotterdam, and then in Chicago, where he received his first art instruction at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1921 he designed the cover for William McFee's "An Engineer's Notebook" and several years later they collaborated on the elusive 'Iron Men and Wood Ships' also edited by Shay (that one with a whopping 150 shanties). This follow-up volume appeared a year later. Very Good/Fair.
