The son of a runaway slave, Paul Robeson (1898-1976) was probably the best-known black figure in the US in the early to mid-twentieth century. A true renaissance man, he was graduate of Rutgers University, where he excelled in 4 sports, a graduate of Columbia Law School, an actor, singer, and outspoken advocate for civil rights. Robeson spent considerable time in Europe and was sympathetic to the Soviet Union, which resulted in the State Department revoking his passport (from 1950-1958). Paul Robeson played a formative role in the development of the black protest movement of the 1960s, and his refusal to compromise on political and racial issues effectively ended his career as a commercially successful artist.
