BIRD, ROBERT MONTGOMERY; ARTHUR HOBSON QUINN, EDITOR The City Looking Glass; A Philadelphia Comedy, in Five Acts
Printed for The Colophon by Pynson Printers. New York. 1933. Cloth; silver spine label. Dust jacket. Limited edition of 465 copies. Page sides and bottoms uncut. Unopened pages. Robert Montgomery Bird is a singularly interesting figure in the history of American drama. He began to write plays in 1827. From the Introduction: "The City Looking Glass, printed here for the first time, was written in July, 1828. It is a comedy in which life in Philadelphia is portrayed with a reality that is ahead of its day". Characters in the play include Ravin, a gentleman swindler who has an ambition above the counterfeiting and pocket picking of his brother Ringfinger; Diana, an heiress he wishes to marry, and others. A controversy erupts in the fourth act over the issues of slavery, the tariff and states rights, which brings the period vividly before us.
