Cambridge:, Cambridge University ,, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Hardback First Edition First Printing with Owner Name Ffep in a Near Fine Dust Jacket with Mild Sun Spine, Cover Edges, Minimal Soil. 8vo. 391 Pp. A Rare Classic of Physics. Near Fine, The authors begin with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and two of its most profound predictions: Many massive stars will undergo gravitational collapse and disappear from view leaving 'black holes' in space; There are singularities in space-time itself--places where space-time begins or ends and the presently understood laws of physics break down. These may well occur inside black holes and can be considered the 'beginning' of the Universe. After setting the stage in the early chapters, in chapter 8 the authors define a singularity in space-time. In chapter 10 they persuasively describe the expansion of the Universe and the implications of their thesis of an initial singularity. They conclude: "The creation of the Universe out of nothing has been argued, indecisively, from early times...The results we have obtained support the idea that the Universe began a finite time ago. However the actual point of creation, the singularity, is outside the scope of presently known laws of physics." This is one of the central works in modern General Relativity and considered by some as a milestone of modern physics.. Offered for US$ 750.00 by: By The Book, LC - Book number: 33364 | |||
