Very Good+, Louis François Antoine Arbogast (1759-1803) was a noted French mathematician and professor of mathematics at Colmar College. In 1789 he presented to the Académie des Sciences a "true theory of the differential calculus" along the lines of Lagrange and Condorcet. The report was never published in that format. But it is the basis of the current work. Arbogast here seeks to establish the principles of calculus independently of limits and the infinitely small, with the simplicity and certitude found in ordinary algebra. He developed the Arbogast series and Arbogast method in calculus. He was the first to separate the symbols of operation from those of quantity . He redefined "continuity" thus providing an introduction to the further study of discontinuous functions. Arbogast was truly an original mathematical thinker who did more than his share in a brief life of 44 years to move the calculus into the future. (See Boyer-History of the Calculus).
