MARTIUS, Galeottus. - De doctrina promiscua lirer (= liber).

Title: De doctrina promiscua lirer (= liber).
Description: Florence, Laurentius Torrentinus, 1548. 8vo. [xvi], 461, [3 blank] pp. Limp vellum (rebacked). (old stamps and owners entries on title page, first 30 pp. stained and slightly moulded, sporadic foxing; annotations and corrections in a contemporary hand) ¶ First edition of this "work of miscellaneous content, dealing with various medical, physical, and astrological questions". Thorndike IV, p.399-405. Galeotto Marzio da Narni (1427-1490?) was from 1461 to 1486 librarian of the famous library of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. He was also favoured by Louis XI of France, according to Gabriel Naudé. Galeotto Marzio finished 'De doctrina promiscua' ca. 1490, and dedicated the book to Lorenzo di Medici il Magnifico in the hope of finding a new mecenas. ¶ Laurentius Torrentinus, (1499-1563) from the Netherlands' province of Brabant, famous printer to Duke Cosimo de Medici. In his introduction he gives two reasons for publishing this work: firstly the importance of Galeotti Marzio and his knowledge; and secondly to praise the Medici family (from whose library he had extracted the manuscript). ¶ Adams M747.
