Original, black and white woodblock prints and Japanese text, with an index to the plants and wildflowers in each. Vol 1 has 2 cho of preliminary text and 26 cho of woodcuts with text. Vol 2 has 19 cho of woodcuts with text, Vol 3 has 23 cho as prior, Vol 4 has 17 cho and Vol 5 has Delicate and lovely botanical woodcuts throughout by the important artist Tachibana Yasukuni 橘保国 1715-1792. Wear to wrappers and spots of toning throughout. Surprisingly unusual work, complete and in good condition as this one is, especially such a lovely printing. It was redone many times through the years, but this edition is easily the most lovely. Described by Bartlett and Shiohara as "one of the most interesting and charming works of old Japanese botany." p. 126. Also see Kerlen p. 121. .
