PERRIN, Jean Paul, Lionnois. HISTOIRE DES VAUDOIS. Geneva, Pierre & Jaques Chouet, 1619. First edition. Octavo. [xxxii]248pp. Bound together with : HISTOIRE DES CHRESTIENS ALBIGEOIS. Contenant les longues guerres, persecutions qu'ils ont souffert a cause de la doctrine de l'Evangile. Par Jean Paul Perrin, Lionnois. Geneva, Mattieu Berjon, 1618. Second edition. Octavo. [viii]333pp. The Vaudois, or Waldensians, and the Albigensians were anti-Papal heretics, movements which began in the latter 12th century and later merged with Protestantism. They practised voluntary poverty and adhered strictly to Scripture (which their founder had translated). They originated in Lyon, which explains the author's proud characterization of himself as "Lionnois." They were subject to severe persecution, particularly under the Benedictine Order. With a fine title woodcut of an angel, holding a Bible, triumphing over death, and decorative initials. In an attractive early calf binding with raised bands to spine. Small chip at head of spine and some creasing of endpapers, else fine. (Graesse V, p. 208). Offered for US$ 1250.00 by: Boston Book Company - Book number: 81126 | |||
