First American edition. 12mo. 19 cm. x,xxxiv,[10],246,[10] pp. Some errors in pagination, but text is complete. Final page is a publisher's advertisement. Contemporary binding with an American bookseller's/binder's ticket on front pastedown; three-quarter leather, marbled sides, gilt-stamped title to spine. Binding is scuffed all over and lightly rubbed along edges but sound. Pencil ownership of John Simmons of Deepfield, Staffordshire, England, who managed the Ulster Iron Works at Saugerties, NY, starting in 1828, where he developed double- puddling, hoop-making, and cold-rolling processes. Light to moderate foxing throughout text. Two leaves are nicked at one forecorner, just nicking the final letters of type on one leaf (p.151-2). Phillips (English, 1775-1828) was one of the founding members of the London Geolgical Society and, later in life, a fellow of the Royal Society. This is one of several influential standard text books he wrote; it went through five editions between 1816-52. (D.S.B.; Shaw & Shoemaker 45320).
