Title: Autograph Letter, Signed, by the American Novelist
Description: 19. CHURCHILL, Winston. Autograph letter, signed, by the popular American novelist (1871-1947). (No relation to the British statesman of the same name, though they were aware of each other and had a passing acquaintance.) It is written in ink on a single sheet of paper, 8 by 9 7/8 in. that is folded at the center to form four pages. There is a small, red wax, signet seal at the top of the first page. The letter begins "My dear Rate" and is followed by seven sentences (31 lines) and signed "Sincerely yours, Winston Churchill." He has written "Wednesday" in the lower left corner, beneath his signature, but it is not dated. It is a friendly letter, opening with pleasantries about Rate and another person named, possibly, Sandor. He goes on to mention car trouble on a recent journey from Berlin to Nashua, immediate plans for him and his family that include a trip to Woodstock and salmon fishing, and invitation to Rate and Sandor to join him. The whole has been folded once more, presumably to fit into an envelope. .
