CUSHING, HARVEY, GEWEBS-VERSCHIEDENHEIT DE HIRNGLIOME UND IHRE BEDEUTUNG FUER DIE PROGN.
1930. Paperback, Fine. CUSHING, Harvey & Percival Bailey. Jena: Gustav Fischer, 1930. Illustrated. x,166 pp., unopened. Octavo, publisher's orange paper wrappers. Lightly sunned at spine, else fine. First edition German-language translation of A Classification of the Tumors of the Glioma Group. (Philadelphia, 1926), a significant monograph in the history of neurology since it represents the first serious attempt to classify gliomatus tumors of the central nervous system on a histological basis correlated with the life history of each growth. The illustrations in the German edition are, for the most part, from the same plates as the English edition but are more successfully reproduced; a few substitutions have been made. The translation was based upon a text that was both corrected and expanded by the authors, and includes a bibliography. The English edition was based upon a total of 412 verified tumors; in their introduction to the German edition, the authors mention that the statistics given are based upon a total of 690 verified cases. New terms, such as "glioblastoma mltiforme" (for "spongioblastoma multiforme"), have been adopted in the translation, and the "neuroblastomas" were dropped from the classification; there are other terminological changes in the text. The additions to the German text have yet to be printed in English. (GM 4608; Cushing Soc. Bibliography nos. 8, English language, & 9, German language).
