Frontispiece portrait, two plates, and text illustrations. Octavo, partly unopened. xxii,621 pp. Text is clean and complete. In original printed paper wrappers which are chipped at fore-edges and have some pencil markings on the back wrap; the spine has several vertical splits, though the bookblock remains sewn, and is chipped at crown. Bookseller's advertisement tipped-in at front. It is a very good copy. In 1896, at the suggestion of Henri Bequerel, Pierre Curie and Marie Curie, his wife, began to intensively examine the peculiarly powerful radioactive properties of pitchblende. In a series of papers beginning in 1897 they reported their progress in isolating new substances they called polonium and radium. In 1903 Pierre and Marie Curie shared the Noble Prize for Physics with Henri Bequerel. (PMM 394b).
