Compiled from the original notes and journals of Commodore Perry and his officers, at his request, and under his supervision, by Francis L. Hawks, D.D.L.L.D. With numerous illustrations. Published by order of the Congress of the United States. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, 1856. First edition, in three volumes. Vol. 1: xviii + 537 pp.; vol. 2: [viii], 414pp. + facsimile of treaty + index + maps; vol. 3: xliii + 705pp. 4to., original cloth, blocked in blind to sides, with title and vignette decorations to spines. The cloth is rubbed at surfaces, with occasional spotting and soiling, and worn at spinal ends. The text and plates are complete; some of the maps in Volume 2 are starting at the folds and have edge tears. This set does have the "bath plate;" (p. 408). Some occasional, light foxing to text and plates. Quite a serviceable set of the House of Representatives issue in the original cloth.
