Born in Germany, she became a student at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. For a time she was a student of Paul Klee. It was at the Bauhaus that she first experimented with weaving. Anni and her husband Josef were invited to teach at the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina where they taught until 1949. During these years Anni Albers' weavings were shown throughout the U.S., culminating in her 1949 show at the Museum of Modern Art.
