Hardcover. Book, Three volumes. London: Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1862. An early edition. An American diplomat, John Lothrop Motley (1814-77) spent five years in Dresden, Brussels, and the Hague to produce, in 1856, this popular history hailed by readers of the time and recognized by scholars since as a standard of the field. The lessons for modern society Motley finds in the microcosm of Holland continue to hold true in today's uncertain political environment, and his dramatic narrative and eloquent, lyrical prose remain a delight. With an autograph letter signed (ALS) from Motley to the Scottish politician, statesman, and author M.E. Grant Duff (1829-1906) affixed to a prefatory leaf in the first volume and Duff's signature on the leaf opposite the title page in all three volumes. Octavo. One-half burgundy morocco over burgundy cloth-covered boards, with handsome gilt stamping, three raised bands, and marbled endpapers. Small ink spot to the bottom edge of the second volume. The spines are a trifle sunned, with a bit of wear to the spine ends and corners; otherwise tight and very good or better. Very Good. Signed by Author(s).
