Set on Los Angeles' oldest street, this Caldecott Honor book tells of the "Posada," a Christmas procession that reenacts Mary and Joseph's pilgrimage to Bethlehem, and of the "pinata," a papier-mache vessel filled with toys that children break open at the Posada's end. Born in Fresno, California in 1908, Leo Politi (1908-96) spent his developmental years studying art at the Institute of Monza in Milan, Italy. Returning to California in 1928, Politi settled near Olvera Street in Los Angeles and began writing and drawing in earnest, winning a Caldecott Award in 1949 for "Song of the Swallows." Inscribed, with original watercolor embellishments, by Politi to fellow children's book author Jennie Dearmin on the front flyleaf. Original pictorial boards.
