Description: New York: December 31, 1919. 1919. - 105 words typed on a sheet of his law firm's approximately 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide letterhead with his name as one of the partners printed at top left. Signed "James M. Beck". The top & bottom edges of the letter are slightly darkened with light creasing to the top edge. There are 2 tiny chips to the top left corner. Very good. In late December 1919 tour manager James B. Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau, New York City, invited a number of distinguished citizens to a reception welcoming Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck to the United States and to his first lecture at Carnegie Hall on January 2nd, 1920. Beck writes to Pond regretting that he has to withdraw from the reception committee. "I am, however, anticipating the pleasure of meeting M. Maeterlinck the following evening at a dinner to be given in his honor at the Lotus Club." James M. Beck [1861-1936] was an American lawyer and politician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Republican Party who served as U.S. Solicitor General [1921-1925] and U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania [1927-1934]. Very good .
