Harold Rugg and his wife are visiting Mexico and Reyes asks him to telephone so they can arrange to meet. "I am usually at home around 3 p.m. It will be an honour and a pleasure for Mrs. Reyes and myself to meet you and Mrs. Rugg anytime at your convenience".
Alfonso Reyes [1889-1959] was a Mexican writer, philosopher and diplomat, referred to by Jorge Luis Borges as "the greatest prose writer in the Spanish language of any age". In 1909 he and other like-minded intellectuals founded the Ateneo de la Juventud to promote new cultural and aesthetic ideals and educational reform. He published his first book "Cuestiones esteticas" at the age of 21. From 1913, he was posted to the diplomatic service for various periods in France, Spain, Argentina and Brazil. In 1939 he retired from the diplomatic service and devoted himself to writing and teaching.
One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg (1886-1960) was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A Civil Engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940's. Very good .
