Description: Newcastle, October 2nd, 1875. 1875. - Irish Operatic Bass Alan James Foli's signature together with the place and date penned on a 3-1/2 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide sheet of paper, apparently the close of a letter clipped away from a larger sheet. Signed "A.J. Foli / Newcastle Oct 2nd 1875". The paper is soiled with creases to the right corners. Remnants of gray paper adhering to the verso suggest that this autograph was once mounted into an album. Good. Born in Tipperary, the Irish operatic singer Allan James Foli (1835-1899) studied with Bisaccia in Naples before making his debut as Elmiro in Rossini's Otello in 1862. He appeared in Milan, Modena, Turin, as well as at the Theatre Italien in Paris, successfully touring all the large towns of Great Britain, Ireland and America. His powerful artistic voice was very popular with all classes of nineteenth century society. Good .
