BARTON - Octavo, navy blue cloth with a printed paper label on the spine. The binding is lightly rubbed. The spine & extremities are a bit faded & the label is darkened & lightly chipped. 135 & [1] pages. Illustrated with a black-and-white frontispiece portrait of Lincoln and a double-page facsimile plate of his letter. Very good.

Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "To Betty Tomlinson / With love of / William E. Barton / August 3, 1929". Barton's "Library of Lincolniana" bookplate is mounted on the front pastedown.

Lincoln wrote his letter to Mrs. Lydia A. Bixby having been informed that all five of her sons had been killed in the Civil War. Later research suggested that she did not have as many as five sons, that one of her sons had been wounded not killed, and that one had been killed as a prisoner of war or may even have defected to the enemy. Very good .
