The binding is slightly rubbed & bumped with a few small red stains near the top edge of the rear cover. vi, [1] leaf & 438 pages plus a 4-page publisher's catalog. The page edges are very slightly darkened. A very good copy in a bright, attractive binding. First edition. Inscribed by W. O. Fuller, Jr. in pencil on the title page and dated Dec. 25/97. Fuller was a Justice and an editor for the Courrier-Gazette of Rockland, Maine. An editorial note states that the end of this novel was left unfinished by Stevenson when he died. The general outline of the remaining chapters was known to Mrs. Strong, his step-daughter and amanuensis, "The delicate task of supplying the missing chapters has been intrusted to Mr. Quiller-Couch, whose work begins at Chapter XXXI." There are 36 chapters in all. Very good .
