An ALS by Herbert Moulton to the recipient of the catalogue, a Dr. Gordon Ward, is tipped in. Also tipped in are three prospectuses for the catalogue.
Described in the catalogue are approximately 10,000 ancient deeds, from the 12th to the early 19th century. The deeds relate to properties and persons in most of the English counties as well as in Scotland and the West Indies.
"The present Catalogue, while frankly a sale-catalogue, has for its aim a much wider and more permanent usefulness..Great care has been bestowed upon the preparation of the abstracts and descriptions of the multifarious deeds and documents which it contains, and their precision and accuracy is such that in addition to their immediate purpose, they provide a treasure-house of information not only for those interested in topography and geneaology but also for the student of social customs and legal forms and their development." .
