Medicina Defendida, Y Medicos Lisongeados: Respuesta a Una Senorita Que Pidio Parecer Sobre El Assumpto. [Madrid?: post 1927]. - Small octavo [7-5/8 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide], printed self-wraps. 8 pages. The lower half of each leaf is detached. The pages are darkened with some light foxing & occasional staining. Good. The author appears at the foot of the last page as "L. Naderi" but the pamphlet is attributed to Juan Francisco de Isla [Palau, 2nd ed., 159333]. The text is in Spanish. The author writes in defence of medicine while also expounding on the many failings of the medical profession. In this context, he refers to the writings of the Benedictine friar Fray Benito Jeronimo Feijoo y Montenegro [1676-1764], an Aristotelian philosopher whose work ranged widely through economics, politics, astronomy, mathematics, physics, history and religion. His eight-volume set of essays "El Theatro Critico" [1727-1739] is referred to in the opening paragraphs of this pamphlet. Feijoo's work was so controversial that Fernando VII had to protect him by appointing him an honorary adviser and prohibiting attacks on his work and his person. Feijoo, a critic of superstition and belief in false miracles, promoted the modernization of Spanish thought and the introduction of more enlightened European ideas. He helped to establish Castilian Spanish as a cultured language, defending its use in place of Latin.Rare. WorldCat locates 3 copies.
