Also with a Pond Bureau broadside, 7 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide, printed on light tan stock, advertising special matinees by Cecilia Loftus, assisted by Beatrice Herford, at the Henry Miller Theatre. There is a light vertical crease to the broadside, else all 3 pieces are in near fine condition. Beatrice Herford began writing and performing her own monologues in England in her twenties, making her public debut in London in 1895. Two years later she married Sidney Hayward of Wayland, Massachusetts. She continued performing her monologues, both in private and public. Gelett Burgress, in his 1906 book "Are You a Bromide?", uses Herford's monologues as an example of his division of personality types into the quotidian [Bromides] and nonconformist [Sulphitic]: "Miss Herford's inimitable monologues, being each the apotheosis of some typical Bromide--a shop-girl a country dressmaker, a bargain-hunter and so on--become, through her art, intensely sulphitic. They are excruciatingly funny, just because she represents types so common that we recognize them instantly. Each expresses the crystallized thought of her particular bromidic group. Done, then, by a person who is herself a Sulphite par excellence, the result is droll".
