(Musee de l'Emperi, 1986). - Oblong octavo [5-7/8 inches high by 8-1/2 inches wide], softcover bound in pictorial black-and-white wraps. The wraps are very slightly soiled & bumped. Unnumbered pages, including catalog listings of 271 items. Black-and-white illustrations. There is an ink inscription on the title page, else near fine. Scientist and explorer Robert de Lamanon was a member of Laperouse's 1785-88 expedition. In the course of the expedition, according to Georges Petit and Jean Theodorides, de Lamanon was the first to discover [eight years before Humboldt] the laws of geomagnetism. The introduction to the catalog notes that Laperouse did not have a lot of use for the scientists on his expedition and that he took a particularly intense dislike to the young scientist Lamanon, with his modern, independent attitudes and ideas.
