The story touches upon the mistreatment of children in English boarding schools, and has been described as one of the author's most humorous novels. This attractive, hefty reprint edition is illustrated with 8 full-page color plates and in black & white at chapter heads by Steven Spurrier. Includes an introduction by John T. Winterich. Sandglass leaflet laid in (New York, no. X: 18). --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards w/maroon decorations on covers & spine, gilt title oval on spine, and maroon topstain. Possibly published c.1950s, though 1940 date appears in book. Volume wrapped in maroon paper-covered slipcase. --- Overall, volume is in sound condition: clean, unmarked and bright but with somewhat yellowed spine and prior owner's bookplate affixed to front free endpaper. Slipcase with partial tear along one joint and mild sunning but remains mostly intact and still able to protect the book.; Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); xii, 784 pages. Very Good- .
