An early Modern Library reprint edition presenting Anatole France's 1894 novel, which is the story about a love affair between a worldly woman, married to a politician, and an artist. The novel is partially based on France's own affair with with Madame Arman de Caillavet. Parts of the story are set in Florence, whose coat of arms is dominated by a red lily.
