These two volumes were published in conjunction with the major town planning exhibitions held in Berlin in 1910/11 and in Düsseldorf in 1912/13, with critical commentary by Hegemann, the General Secretary of both exhibitions. The Berlin exhibition (and volume) focuses on the problems of rapid growth and future development of the city of Berlin. The Düsseldorf exhibition (and volume) of several years later took a much more international approach to town planning, concerned in particular with the problems imposed on planning by the introduction of the motor car. Planning projects (both realized and projected) in Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Munich, Cologne, London, Stockholm, Chicago and Boston, are included, many of which treat urban traffic and public open spaces. Werner Hegemann was one of the most erudite of early planners, who before his death in 1936 was active professionally not only in Europe but also North and South America. VG.
