Happy Together is a romantic drama released on the 30th of May 1997 in Hong Kong that was written, produced, and directed by Wong Kar-Wai with cinematography from the author of this book, Christopher Doyle. The plot revolves around homosexual couple Ho Po-Wing and Lai Yiu-Fai and their turbulent relationship. After a break-up in Argentina leaves them without a means to return home they must try to cooperate despite growing resentment. The film was received positively by critics and has continued to remain relevant, ranking 3rd in a British Film Institute poll for 'the Greatest LGBT Film of All Time' in 2016 and 71st in the BBC's poll for 'The Greatest Foreign-Language Film of All Time' in 2018, and was re-screened in 2017 and 2022 for its 20th and 25th anniversary at the 'Golden Horse Awards' and 'Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema' respectively..
